Q:
Could someone out there give me some advice please. We Are docking in Livorno on a med cruise in 3 weeks time. We are not sure if we would be able to see Florence and Pisa in the same day. I personally would just go to Florence, as advised by a few of my friends who have been, but my children want to see the leaning tower - any suggestions please!!

We went on a ship tour which included Florence and Pisa. Florence we travelled to first and on the way back called in Pisa for a short stop. Enough time to take some photos but not to go up tower, not much else there apart from some tacky shops! We wouldn't bother again, preferred to spend more time in Florence. We weren't worried about the tight schedule as it was an organised tour through the ship, one coach was a little late getting back but the ship waited, if on your own they wouldn't have.

Florence is around 60 miles from Livorno and will be about 1.5hours travelling each way whether by road or rail. It can be done but it does not leave you with much time there.
Pisa is much closer, around 15 miles and there are frequent trains but the train station in Livorno is a bus ride away from where you get dropped off in the port shuttle bus. Across the road from the shuttle bus drop off point, there is a tobacconist, with a sign outside in English "Bus/train tickets to Pisa/Florence". Get your bus and train tickets there and they will tell you what bus to get for the station. You can check the train times on http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html
From memory, the total return cost to Pisa bus and train was around 7€ each

Hello
When you dock at Livorno this is a popular all day excursion offered by the majority of cruise lines. You will have time to see both. I did this trip a few years back, coach leaves the ship early and takes you to Pisa for about half an hour - time to see the tower and buy a souvenir at one of the many stalls there! then its off quick as a flash for the scenic ride to Florence. Here you'll be met by a guide who'll take you around Florence on foot. As I said it's a full day probably in the region of 6 hours, with a stop for lunch. Be careful of pick pockets in Florence and don't take any valuables with you (as I know from experience!) have a great cruise. David Powell travel journalist

Thanks for your answer. I was wondering if this could be done on our own without the cost of a trip booked on the ship?. The price for the 4 of us with NCL for that trip would be approx 130 dollars each!!

As David Powell has already mentioned, yes you can do it by taxi, but it's a lot to do in one day and, as Pellatt from Swindon has already mentioned, if you are on an organised tour which is delayed then the ship will wait for you. If your taxi is held up for any reason then you are on your own. I know of one couple who missed the ship at Livorno because their taxi was delayed due to an accident on the autostrada from Florence. Fortunately the next stop was Monaco which isn't that far away and they could watch the ship arrive the next morning!! If you do go for it them make Pisa your last place to visit then at least you can give it a miss if you are delayed for any reason. Have a nice holiday.

Hello. Yes the cruise tours can be expensive when you have a family. The only advice I can give is to consider a taxi when you land, they are usually quite competitive and it gives you more scope to do your own thing.. Obviously negotiate the amount before hand. I dont know how old your children are, but consider that Florence is architecture, wonderful churches and old buildings and a long coach ride. I know when my two girls were younger they would be quite bored with such a trip like this! Whereas the trip to Pisa in a taxi would be good family fun and no hassle to get on a bus allowing you a bit more time, and back to the ship for lunch!! Hope this is of some help. David
