We decided to try a mini break without the children on a different ship to that we have sailed on before. We arrived in Southampton and was very impressed with the look of the ship. The embarkation process was extremely smooth - probably the best we have experienced. On arrival on the ship we were greeted with a glass of champagne which was very much appreciated. We took ourselves to the cabin and were very impressed with the the size and layout. It was very clean and comfortable with a well stocked mini bar.
We were less impressed with the service that we received and the restaurant facilities. Having boasted 10 different restaurants we found that most of them we had to pay a cover charge to use. We used the buffet which we found to be adequate, but the staff were not very friendly - including on the last morning, being tols very abruptly that the cooked breakfast was not ready! The service in one of the main restaurants was very good, but the food was very basic - we ordered steak and chips and that was what we got - no side salad, vegetables or anything else. We also found that this was the only ship we had been on where the cabin steward did not introduce thereselves - we never met him/her. However, we did have to pay a service charge of $10 per day per person - perhaps as they know they are receiving this automatically and not rely on tips they do not have to try so hard! Had this not been deducted automatically - I do not think we would ahve left a tip at all. On the last morning when we received our on board account we had been charged for 3 bottles of evian water from the mini bar that we had not even used. On questioning this at reception I was asked repeatedly if anyone in the cabin may have had them - when I said all we had had was a can of Sprite that was all they were concerned with was charging for this and it took half an hour before they agreed to refund the $15 for 3 bottles of water that we never had. Overall it was na enjoyable weekend - however, I don't think we will cruise with them again.
