As a family of 4, two boys aged 11 and 13 we loved our trip on the Jade. I have read the other reviews with interest and at first was really shocked at some of the criticisms. We did our research beforehand although we have been on the Jades sister ship and felt that it compared really well.

Embarking at Southampton was easy and relaxing much better than fighting your way through crowds at airports! We too enjoyed the champagne and then went immediately to the Grand Pacific which was not very busy and where we had good food and service. Our inside cabin on 8 was very roomy with having two tall boys and 4 big cases we needed it and we managed to store all our clothes away. I agree with one comment about it being very dark but we knew what to expect and for the price we paid we couldn't complain.

Food: We were fully aware of the charges in most of the restaurants and factored that into our spending money together with using the 2 for 1 earlybird offers. We tried all the restaurants apart from the Italian. In all restaurants the service was good and the food excellent - empty plates every time. Nheuman in Alizars was the boys favourite as he did magic tricks for them. However, we witnessed one incident concerning a very rude Englishman in the Blue Lagoon, totally unwarrented shouting and complaining that his food was cold after he had eaten and cleared the plate. There was no need for this, Ariel the waiter was really upset and couldn't the man have just ordered something else as he was eating freestyle? It seems that complaining loudly is a new British past time. Our favourite was Le Bistro - early bird offer equivalent to £15 for 4 people. We had breakfast at either Grand Pacific or the buffet at the back of the ship.

Entertainment: Not as good as on the Island Star last year. Two comedians were good as was SHout. We enjoyed Second City most of the time and felt they did try to cross the Atlantic with their humour on occasions.

Excursion: Again knew they were expensive and did our own. We even managed Florence which was fantastic. As we had been to Rome on a cruise before we didn't do too much there but were amazed at how quiet it was.

Activities: The boys were not really interested in the Kids Club but joined in various tournaments table tennis, soccer and the WII tournaments. My husband and I went on the Old World Wine Tasting which cost $15 each but we learnt a lot and enjoyed the wines!

Service: As mentioned we had good service in the Restaurants and everywhere else to be honest. We paid the surcharge for service as we encountered only good service. I did notice that on the last night when we were in Bar City and in Alizar's there was a lot of hugging between staff and customers - something I have not seen on the other cruises we have been on.

Just to mention the prices on board - the drinks due to the reasonable rate of sterling against the dollar were quite reasonable. We met a couple in Rome who were on a Costa Cruise and their drinks in Euros were costing a lot more.

SOmeone compares the Jade with the Independence of the Seas but whilst it would be nice to go on a ship with what appears to be many more activities when we booked the Jade we checked out the price on the IOS and it would have cost us £1500 more for the equivalent cabin on the same date also The Island Star would have cost us £1000 more.

In conclusion we feel that value for money was excellent and we met some lovely friendly people our only negative from the cruise was the rude and ignorant behaviour we saw on occasions from other people.

Quality of Food5
Excellentfood enjoyed having ice cold water also.
Entertainment2
Could have been a bit better
Shore Excursionsn/a
Did our own - just research on the internet and you will find everything you need.
Staff5
As mentioned in review. Also saw staff in the Garden Cafe helping people to their tables.
Children's Facilities4
Kids clubs seemed to be having a good time. Didn't hear any noise at the Blue Lagoon despite cabin being nearby. Children had lots to do despite only going to the very occasional meeting.
Onboard Activities4
No problems had things to do if we wanted to do them.
Cabins4
Loved the beds and the shower. Plenty of storage space. Loved the chocs every evening.

Are the ports easy to do on your own? We are thinking of doing this cruise next year and like to "explore" on our own. Does Jade dock in the ports or do you go in by tender? Any advice on the ports would be appreciated.

We have just returned from a cruise on the Jade. We travelled independently at all the ports and found them easy to do. For Rome, it was a straightforward 10 minute walk to the train station. The tickets cost 9 euros per person and this included travel on the buses and metro in Rome. I would take a map of Rome. It is a good city to walk around but obviously a simple map would help. We went to Pisa. This was a shorter but slightly more complicated journey because it involved a bus and train journey. However the shuttle bus drops you outside the Tourist Information centre in Livorno and they give maps and directions. I would recommend looking at the 'Trenitalia' website before you go as this will give you the train timetables for the trains in Italy and we found their information to be accurate. In Barcelona, we used the Open top Tourist buses but would not do so again. They were very busy and slow. To be honest, we found that there were lots of people from the various cruise ships travelling independently all going to the same destinations so we did not feel alone and found that everyone seemed to share any useful information they had.

Question by Goose, Wisbech (19 Aug 08 14:00) about this REVIEW.
We're booked on Jade next spring, and previously have been on cruises where you pay no extra to eat. Where, on Jade, is the food you've paid for in your cruise price? What is the food like in those places, as I have no intention in paying any more than I already have to eat? Many thanks Mary

A certain number of the dining rooms charge a cover charge all depending on which one you go to. The free dining rooms Alizar and Grand dining room usually have the same menu as one another "Cagneys" is a steak place and has a hefty cover charge but is excellent. At least five dining rooms have a cover charge or you can go to deck 12 anf join the crowd for a free for all

Although I have not cruised on Jade, I recently cruised on the sister ship Jewel. On the Jewel there are two main restaurants that do not incur a surcharge(Both serving the same manu). In addition there is a buffet restaurant, poolside buffets and limited room service menus. So it is possible to dine very well without paying additional cover charges. I am certain it is the same on the Jade.

This is the same case on the Jade. However there is a marked difference in the quality of both service and food in the resaurants where a surcharge is paid. Where you pay it is considerably better...

I was delighted to read your positive comments. We were on Jade to Norway in July and agree with all you say. I really despair at some of the Brits who make a career of complaining, I suspect in reality they are seeking some sort of refund / compensation. Complaints about service charges and gratuities, supplements for special restaurants - they should read the brochure. Complaints about the cost of trips? again look at the website before they go, it's all there!Really sad! Having said that we were on Dream last year. It was not good but then the ship was older and not suited to Freestyle Cruising and NCL did acknowledge that and apologised. It has now been withdrawn to Far East market with set dining times. We are looking to do 2 NCL cruises next year.

We were on the Jade in June and are not in the habit of complaining but when you are woken in the early hours of the morning by out of control children in the cabin above on numerous occasions we felt we were justified in complaining this was met with indifference by the staff even after a security officer agreed it was unacceptable when we called him to our cabin to listen for himself. There were many issues raised by numerous other people. We did not get any refund.

I so agree with you about the career complainers and their real intent. I don't know if cruise companies keep a list between them about serial demanders of refunds but if they don't they could learn a thing or two from insurance companies who now log serial claimants.
