Not having cruised before, we set out to see Alaska from the NCL Sun. Obviously you only scratch the surface of a landmass larger than Europe in a one week cruise but myself and my partner both loved the experience.
The ship/cabin were very clean. We had an inside cabin and found it quite sufficent in size,as was the shower room. The staff were most helpful and restaurant service was first class, particularly in the Seven Seas Restaurant which we used for almost all our dining. We had started out on the buffet but quickly decided that the offering there was more about quantity than quality. The Four Seasons was very good also. Judgeing by the comments of some of our fellow passengers, the restaurants where you had to pay a cover charge were not always worth it!
A comprehensive range of trips were offered although we only did one in Skagway where we had a longer stop. The White Pass Railway was an excellent way to spend 3 hours for a reasonable $112. Some tours are available cheaper on shore than through NCL but timings are not guarenteed and it might be too much of a risk.
The towns visited were Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. Juneau has the excellent Mt. Roberts Tramway convenient to the shuttle bus drop off from the dock. At $25 the tramway was an excellent way to actually get to some Alaskan countryside trails with spectacular views. Given the early departure from Juneau you wont have time to see much of this the state capital though if you do the tramway.
The tracy arm fjord is undoubtedly the highpoint of the cruise. An afternoon you wont forget!
Entertainment was excellent throughout. Comedian, dance troup and singers, magician etc.all exceeded our expectations and made for a first time cruise experience we will certainly be hoping to repeat
Quality of Food5
Seaven Seas Restaurant. Huge daily choice. Fish,Lamb,Beef,Vegetarian,Chicken well represented daily. Buffet too crowded. Hard work to get a seat. Not our cup of tea. Much better to eat in the serviced restaurants.
Entertainment5
I could'nt fault any of the shows. Jean Ann Ryan(mostly British,Irish) dancers/singers excellent. Hey Mr.Producer is a sampler compilation from the work of Cameron Mackintosh with lots of well known songs and some dance. Cirque Pan is "Cirque de Soleil" style dance piece. Que Nocce was latin dance show. All very varied and done well. Joe Yanetti is hilarious but dont sit too near him in case he starts on you! A natural comedian. Jean Pierre vas a first class comedian and magician. Acapelo group with a difference "The Cats Pajamas" are sure to be very well known soon.
Shore Excursions3
Only did one with NCL. The White Pass Scenic railway. Well worth cost. Recommend Tramway ride up mt.Roberts at Juneau. More to my taste most trips on offer.
Staff5
All the staff were good most were excellent. Seven Seas provded standard of service never seen in UK anymore. Authoreen our housekeeper was a real sweetie who was always pleasant and kept us entertained with towels made up into animals on our bed nightly!
